At this point, you may have some questions. Here are a few words about us and what we do!
What is a Small Microgrid System?
A microgrid is a local electrical grid that generates its own power rather than relying entirely on the national grid. Any house or other building with solar has a microgrid, for example. Microgrids can be quite large, ranging from 100 kilowatts (kW) to multiple megawatts (MW).
Here at Micro Hydroelectric Solutions, we specialize in small microgrids, from 20kW to 200kW, especially using hydroelectric turbines rather than solar, wind, or fossil fuel generators. This is a largely ignored market, especially in the U.S., and we’d like to help change that!
Why Hydropower?
Every type of electrical generation system has its pros and cons. Just looking at the main green options, we can make some generalizations. Solar requires rows and rows of panels and only generates power during daytime and in good weather. Wind requires large towers, can be hazardous to our avian friends, and only works with a good breeze. For these reasons, you need a backup generator and alternate power source to supplement solar or wind.
Meanwhile, a hydroelectric turbine needs… wait for it… a suitable water site. With that, however, it is generally a better option than the alternatives. The turbines that we use have a small footprint and are fish friendly. They’re low maintenance. They can run 24/7. They provide green energy.
As a general rule, the systems we provide are rated for higher generation of electricity than is needed by our customers. Why do we do that? Because it’s better to have more power than you need, or think you need in the coming years, than to run short. In addition, we recommend selling excess energy back to the national grid: this helps your community with reliable, resilient, green energy and also provides a source for long-term residual income!
What is Your Process?
We start with an online survey / assessment form. If we have any questions after that, we’ll ask; otherwise, we’ll be able to provide a recommendation with specs and estimate for your system. Our engineers are happy to have a chat anytime you’d like to discuss, and at some point, we’ll want to see the site (though there’s a lot we can do with a walkabout video chat using your phone!)
Once you’ve given us the go-ahead, we have a number of behind-the-scenes tasks: file for permits and regulatory approvals, determine water rights, coordinate with your local power company, order components and materials, and so on. You’ll be assigned a personal project manager who’ll be your point of contact with the team.
The actual build will be scheduled with you and our efforts will come together at that time. In just a few days, the construction team will build the system and train you in its use. We also offer an option to keep us on for remote management and maintenance and complete peace of mind.
